The artist initiated the series “Este Recuerdo” after her parents passed away, and she started clearing out the family’s belongings, including clothing and photographs. Her mother had been the recipient of generations of the family’s photos, and her mother had packed away her father’s materials as well. This series is a way of remembering Vargas’s parents and her ancestors. A milagro heart is in the center of the photograph. Philosopher Georges Bataille states that we are discontinuous beings, whereas our souls are continuous with eternity, and when we are born, we enter a limited existence so we are no longer of eternity. We are discontinuous. The heart represents life with all its pains as represented by thorns. The red border of the interior cut-in square indicates the border between life, death, and eternity. The grass at the base of the photograph alludes to a grave. This title is used on multiple, related photographs in the series. Gelatin silver print with hand coloring and an additional photograph cut-in. Dimensions: 24” x 20”
