This high contrast photograph was created during the early 1970s. Both John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were very important to African American and Chicano communities. The artist was invited into the woman’s house who proudly showed her images of both martyrs. Vargas chose to include just the hands as a tribute to the helping hands of the two political giants. At the same time, the woman’s dignified face is highlighted as a past recipient of their advocacy. The calendar to the left of the woman has an attached news clipping of one of her granddaughter's activities. The piece is about the promises of the past (King and Kennedy) and the promise of the future (her granddaughter). Gelatin silver print. Dimensions: 7” x 10 ½”
