Description: This work is from the series “Last of My Lace.” Vargas was creating feminist images during the last years of her MFA. Initially, her professors didn’t like them because they thought the use of lace was too feminine. Vargas told her instructors that this was “the last of my lace” to quiet them. In this piece, an abstracted bird flies through space. The use of the avian was influenced by images of Quetzalcoatl in modern architecture. By abstracting the image she presents the viewer with a contemporary Quetzalcoatl. The body of the bird is created by capturing an agave spine. Gelatin silver print with hand coloring. Dimensions: 11” x 14”
