This work is from the installation, “Shopping for Bargains.” The item is part of an edition. The artist began working on this series in 2019. This item may be one of the first created to examine how clothing is inexpensively manufactured outside of the United States, allowing corporations to generate significant profits, and the role of consumers in this unjust system. This piece emphasizes the beauty of textiles. According to Vargas, consumers in the United States are seduced by this beauty, especially the beauty of so-called exotic fabrics and cultures. The work has an appliqué of real buttons and the bottom portion is fabric. The exhibition “Shopping for Bargains/My Mother Taught Me to Shop” premiered at ArtPace in San Antonio, Texas, in 2024. Mixed media with gelatin silver print, hand coloring, textile, and appliqué of buttons. Approximate dimensions: 15 1/2” x 7 ¾”
